Why not Bil Keane?

Daniel Radosh

David Marc Fischer, better known to you and me as loyal reader and anti-captioner David F, has died unexpectedly of leukemia at the age of....

Well, I don't know how old he was, or much else about him at all. It's one of the odd pleasures of blogging that we can form real connections to one another without ever learning the things that in a pre-Internet world would be so basic. I do know that David had a clever wit, which he displayed as the proprietor of Blog About Town, where he kept meticulous track of both the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest and the Anti-Caption Contest. It was based on that that I invited him a couple of times to be a guest blogger, in which capacity he produced, with the help of Deborah, several altered Bil Keane cartoons, of which the first is still my favorite.

Emdashes has a bit more about David and his interests. Anyone else who knew him is encouraged to leave their thoughts in the comments.

Update: Deborah points out that David did win the anti-caption contest once, and was rightly proud of his joke.

It's all downhill from here

Daniel Radosh

What a treat to come back home and find that the subletters have actually left the place nicer than they found it. I can't think enough my stellar team of guest bloggers. I hope you kept up with the site over the last couple of weeks, 'cause there was a lot of great stuff here. David and Deborah's Family Circus made me laugh out loud (not just type LOL). Guilfoile's history of the Jaws of Life was so fascinating I still can't believe it appeared here, rather than the NYT op-ed page. TG Gibbon gave us the complete undead covers of Dark Mysteries (and all-around the best post title). Vance nailed a political meme that I hope will not go away just because Bristol Palin got knocked up. Simsburybear had an actual scoop with Monica Goodling's wedding registery. And Dave provided an awesome soundtrack for the whole thing.

Thanks again everyone. You can take a break until the next time I take a break.

Maybe Fred Thompson Will Get To Intervene Twice

Kevin Guilfoile

Last October Hans Peterson rented a car and drove to Chicago from his home in New York City. He parked in a garage near the lake, took an elevator to the 12th floor of a Michigan Avenue office building, bound and gagged 64-year-old dermatologist Dr. David Cornbleet, and then stabbed the struggling physician more than twenty times until he was dead. The 28-year-old then got back on the elevator, returned to his car and drove home. Peterson has confessed and as far as I know these facts aren't in dispute.

After the jump, I'll describe how he might get away with it.
